This starts off quite amusingly as Jonathan Miles ("Justin") narrates us through a little of his young life, dressing up etc. (being portrayed by child actors who didn't look remotely like him!), and of his current rather one dimensional relationship with his homophobic father who funds his studies so long as he gets straight A's and, well, is straight... After a stupid prank with a tree, he ends up in hospital where he is tended by "Michael R.N." (Bjorn Anderson) and determines to get him out on a date... Their respective back stories, though quite serious in intention, are just a little too contrived, but Miles's performance is quite engaging; the writing occasionally quite witty and well paced, and his unique courting strategy has an honesty to it that I found refreshing - ever remember playing crazy golf (and cheating), or just tickling someone...? It runs out of steam a bit, though, and the ending features a truly ghastly self-penned love song that is tone deaf and really rather milk-curdling. That said, it's still quite a well put together effort from Michelle Leigh with an amiable degree of chemistry between the leads that is watchable, if a little cringemaking. Celebrate diversity and take the offer of an outstretched hand. Naive, perhaps, but who needs bigoted parents, or their conditional wallets?
